Permeable and Impermeable Cap
The Impermeable cap is proposed to block the contaminated water. The Impermeable cap covers acres of the tidewater site. The cap will be made up of 2 ft of clean soil 18.57 acres and under the soil there will be clay. This is to prevent rainwater and surface water from infiltrating the NHIS and trash. This is to prevent continued degradation of groundwater quality. A second cap will made which is going to be the permeable cap covers 3.05 acres. Unlike the Impermeable cap this cap lets water through. Allowing water to be purified.
Underground Wall
Although great damage has already been done to the tidewater site there is variety of plans that can be implemented to prevent further damage. One of these plans is the great wall, this is not the great wall of China but it is the great underground wall that will save the Seekonk river from contaminants and chemicals. This underground wall is not the whole National Grid plan but just part of the many plans national grid has. Fortunately, with these plans they all correspond with each other and will be there if one fails.
NAPL Wells
After the wall is built, wells will be built to capture NAPL . NAPL are chemicals that do not mix well with water. After the NAPL is captured it will be retrieved out of the water. Since NAPL does not mix with water it can destroy the aquatic ecosystem. The NAPL can drift into the ocean and destroy various aquatic ecosystems. The effects can be devastating if something is not done. NAPL’s left on solid surfaces can also negatively affect plants and travel by the process of erosion, causing even more contamination along other grassy areas.
Bulkheads
The destroyed bulkheads are to be repaired 700feet around the water line in order to prevent erosion so the contaminated soil may not contaminate the water. This is a safety layer above ground to ensure that the soil will not poison the water ways and endanger other aquatic life.
