The History of Tidewater:
How has the Tidewater Site been used over the past 130 years?
Do you know who’s to blame for, for this tidewater incident that is a problem now? The Tidewater site has been by the MGP ( Manufactured Gas Plants)the purpose was to produce gas over the past 130. The city had to use gas for their electricity and an underground pipe would bring the gas to the communities homes also served as an power source. They produced this gas for what gas is used today. For example they used it for lighting, cooking, and heating when it was needed the most especially in cold temperatures. In the year 1890 the tidewater site was the number one station for to create electricity. "The station used coal, petroleum-based products, and residual by-product tars
from the MGP for electricity generation." The station used coal, and many by-products which were awful toxins for the environment and the people of Pawtucket. Some bad toxins that were produced was tar, sludge's and oil. Later on they realized that creating electricity created conflicts that were hard to resolve. The electricity company instantly stopped creating electricity by using gas in the years of 1968 and 1975.
What companies have owned the site in the past?:
National Grid isn’t at fault for what’s going on at the Tidewater site, over the past years the Tidewater site has been owned by many companies. One Company that had owned the site over time was the Pawtucket Gas Company. The time that they owned it was in the year 1880. They built the Tidewater manufactured gas plant(MGP) to produce gas from resources like coal or oil. After a couple years, in 1908 Blackstone Valley Gas Company bought the Northern part of Tidewater. Then in 1961 Valley Gas Company took MGP and NFA from Blackstone Valley Gas Company. But BVEC still owned the power plants and south parts of Tidewater. In 2006 National Grid bought the land and now owns the gas utility and NFA.
Who are the stakeholders involved in the dialogue and decision-making for what becomes of the tidewater site?:
The stakeholders involved in the dialogue and decision-making for what becomes of the Tidewater site are National Grid. They currently own property of the land and the citizens of Pawtucket because it is in their community. National Grid currently created stations on the site and surrounded the site with a fence, so that the community wouldn’t enter it. One of the station that’s on the site is a Gas regulating, what the Gas Regulating Station does is it controls the gas that’s on the Tidewater Site. Other stakeholders or people that show certain concern for the tidewater site are the gas control teams and the people that check the toxin levels of the site. For if the site becomes overly polluted it is their job to fix that.
