Arsenic
What is it?
It is a metaloid in the periodic table, number 33. It is found in the earth crust and if inhaled or exposed to, can cause serious health risks. The color is gray, has 42 isotopes, a covalent bond, and when heated doesn't turn into a liquid, but a gas.
Every element has a discovrer and the discovrer of arsenic was a man named Albertus Maqnus in 1250 AB. Albertus heated a common compound of arsenic with soap and formed pure arsenic. Albertus later died in 1280 AB. It wasn’t until the mid-seventeenth century that arsenic became well known as an element.
Health Risks?
Being around arsenic can be fatal to your health. If exposed to arsenic it can cause an increase of different types of cancer such as skin, liver, bladder and lungs. It also can cause diarrhea and damage to the kidneys. Breathing high levels can result to sore throat or irritated lungs. Very high levels can lead to death.
Effects on Children
Arsenic can even affect your children. Long trem exposure to arsenic can lead children to have low IQ scores. In pregnant women, scientist have found that in their breast milk there are low levels of arsenic.
Studies have shown if given large doses of arsenic to female animals that are pregnant, it can cause low birth weight, fatal death, and fatalmalformations.
